Kubotan (often confused with a similar weapon named Yawara) was invented by a former Japanese police officer and martial arts master, Takayuki Kubota. The weapon was not invented in the days of Japanese samurai, but in 1970. Kubota was teaching martial arts and self-defence to Los Angeles police officers, and one day, an idea of a small pocket weapon came to his mind.
Kubotan is also called “tactical pen” because it looks like a pen. This self-defence weapon is up to 14 centimetres long, with the diameter of approximately 1.25 centimetres. We could describe it as a slightly more dangerous pen.
Kubotans are typically made of hard, high-impact plastic, but they can also be made of metal or wood. They are often richly decorated. The body of the kubotan is usually lined with round grooves that make it easier to hold in the hand and prevent it from slipping from a clenched fist. They often have a split ring attachment at one end for keys.
It is recommended to always carry a kubotan with you. You can easily put it in a pocket of your jacket or jeans, or just attach it to your keychain.
Aiming Correctly Can Help You Win Against a Heavier Attacker
Kubota registered the weapon as kubotan and obtained a trademark for it. Police officers wore a kubotan at their belts, like a keychain They used their pocket weapon in fights against detainees or unruly citizens, for strikes or stabbing, targeting vulnerable or sensitive parts of the assailant’s body. Because of this, the kubotan is also sometimes dubbed the ‘instrument of attitude adjustment’. In some Asian countries, it is a mandatory equipment of the police force.
What are the principal targets for a kubotan strike?
The usual targets include pressure points and sensitive parts of the body, such as knuckles, forearms, stomach, solar plexus, neck, and, in extreme cases, eyes. Kubotan is usually held in a fist grip, similarly to the murderer’s grip of knife in the famous scene from the film Psycho by Hitchcock. Alternatively (for forward strikes), you can hold the kubotan with the back end held in the palm. Kubotan will help you keep the aggressor contained until the police arrives, for example.
Common uses also include hardening the fist (fistload) to increase the power of punching. If you want to make your side punches more effective, use the centre point grip, where you hold the kubotan in the middle of your hand so its both ends can be seen. But remember that kubotan is to be used only in self-defense.
A tip for more effective self-defense
If you want to get better at using kubotan, focus on improving the strength of your kubotan grips. That can be practiced, for example, by lifting light weights only with your wrists, by hanging on a horizontal bar, or by using specialized work-out tools and balls that are designed to improve grip strength.
The kubotan is especially useful for getting out of choke holds that come from behind. Depending on your options, you can aim for the attacker’s abdomen, groin, or back of their hand. It will often work! If you are lying on the ground, aim for the instep or the area around the Achilles heel.

Kubotan
An original kubotan keychain with keys attached
Kubotan (sometimes erroneously spelled as kubaton or kobutan) is a genericized trademark for a self-defense keychain weapon developed by Sōke Takayuki Kubota in the late 1960s. It is typically no more than 5.5 inches (14 centimetres) long and about half an inch (1.25 centimetres) in diameter, slightly thicker or the same size as a marker pen. The body of the Kubotan is lined with six round grooves with a screw eye or swivel and split ring attachment at one end for keys
History
The Kubotan keychain was originally based on a small bamboo weapon called the “hashi stick”, an invention by Kubota’s father Denjiro. Its popularity grew in 1969 to 1970s when Kubota, at the request of California State Senator Edward M. Davis then former Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, created the weapon and began training female officers in its application. It is often touted as extremely effective in breaking the will of unruly suspects with painful locks and pressure point strikes. Because of this, the Kubotan is also sometimes dubbed the ‘instrument of attitude adjustment’.
Concept
Applied as a weapon, some of its usage can be similar to that of the yawara stick or koppo stick. The principal targets in self-defence include bony, fleshy and sensitive parts such as knuckles, forearms, the bridge of the nose, shins, stomach, solar plexus, spine, temple, ribs, groin, neck and eyes. The Kubotan is usually held in either an icepick grip (for hammerfist strikes) or forward grip (for stabbing, pressure point attacks and seizing). Common uses include hardening the fist (fistload) for punching, attacking vulnerable parts of an assailant’s body, and gaining leverage on an assailant’s wrist, fingers and joints. With keys attached, it can function as a flailing weapon. As a pressure point weapon it can attack any point a finger can, but with greater penetration because of the smaller surface area at the ends. For example, a law enforcement officer may wrap his arm around a suspect’s neck while simultaneously digging the end of the Kubotan into the small of his back. The officer may also reach around the suspect’s neck and underarm from behind and cause pain by stabbing the end of the Kubotan into the top of his pectoral muscle. In other locking and compliance applications, the body of the Kubotan can be used to create pain. A typical pain compliance technique involves seizing an attacker’s wrist and sealing both hands around it with the length of the Kubotan laid across the radius bone. Downward squeezing pressure is then applied to the bone to take down the attacker.
Legality
The Kubotan may appear as an innocuous key fob to the untrained eye. In some cases however it may be recognized and considered an offensive weapon in some jurisdictions. In the United States there are few legal restrictions on Kubotans, with the notable exception that they are prohibited as carry-on items for air travellers.[1] Whether a non-spiked Kubotan (i.e. a rod) is classed as an offensive weapon in the UK depends upon the circumstances of the case and is for a jury to decide.[2] In April 2010 actor and entertainer Darren Day was found guilty of possessing an offensive weapon, namely a kubotan-style keyring, by a court in Edinburgh.[3]
Improvised versions of the Kubotan can be readily found and put to use. Because a Kubotan is just a rod of a hard material, any restrictive regulation would most likely be ambiguous and undefined due to the ability for any common item to be used in a kubotan-like fashion. In this respect, the Kubotan can be substituted by everyday items such as hairbrushes, pens, markers, flashlights, small wooden dowels and even electronic cigarettes. Metal pens (i.e. tactical pens) are also sometimes marketed as substitutes for the Kubotan.

A study of nearly 3,000 children in the Journal of Pediatrics found that children between the ages of six and 19 who had been exposed to phthalates (measured by levels of breakdown products of the chemicals in their urine) had higher levels of blood pressure than those who didn’t.
When I asked the lead researcher, Leonardo Trasande from New York University School of Medicine, if the small, clinically insignificant rise in blood pressure was likely to mean anything, he said it could do so in later life. “We know that phthalates damage the walls of arteries by oxidative stress and they may directly damage heart cells,” he says. “We know these chemicals get into food from plastic wrappings and gloves, and that they are in PVC flooring and cosmetics. We think they may have a effect on cardiovascular health and that children and adolescents should have limited exposure.”
